A Hawaii Vein Specialist Explains Why Experts Know That Seeing a Vein Doctor Is a Good Idea

One of the oddest things we deal with as varicose vein treatment specialists in Honolulu and Maui is the number of patients who come to us who admit that they were told by their general practitioners to see a vascular doctor, but who didn't do it. In some cases they got this advice from their GPs years before they came to see us, long before their varicose veins became painful and problematic. Instead of following that advice, however, they decided to try to "live with" their swollen and discolored veins. And as a result, they got worse – often so much worse that by the time they did see a specialist, they were in constant pain.

Why seeing a vein disease specialist makes sense

Diagnosing and treating vein disease is a very specialized field, one that requires a great deal of expertise, training, and on-the-job experience. It takes many years to master the use of ultrasound to look beneath the surface of the skin and detect the presence of diseases such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). And then it requires even more years to master the minimally-invasive interventional radiology procedures used to treat them.

Vein Clinics of Hawaii is widely regarded as one of the best vein treatment centers in Maui because our doctors have those years of training and experience. We know which minor cases of varicose veins can be treated conservatively with diet, exercise, and the use of compression stockings. And we also know which cases of varicose veins are more serious, and can really only be treated by removing them completely. Left untreated, these more serious cases won't ever get better or "go away on their own" – they'll get worse, and can result in years of pain, discomfort, and even disability.

So trust your general practitioner and follow his or her advice

If your GP told you to see a heart specialist, you'd go, right? Then why put off seeing a vascular specialist when he or she tells you one is necessary? When you need expertise, you need to see an expert. So if your GP has noticed early signs of spider veins, varicose veins, or even DVT, don't procrastinate – find a Hawaii vein specialist, and then trust him to help you.
